The Greatest American Rock Band Bracket!
Sweet Sixteen: Voting completed
Voting in the Sweet Sixteen Round has now ended! Only one top-seeded band remains in the competition: the mighty men of Athens, GA's own R.E.M. Now, we move on to the Elite Eight Round and choose the ultimate division champs. Over 3,500 votes were cast in this round. Here are the results:
Classic Rock Division:
The big Cinderella story of this tournament is the #9 Allman Brothers Band, who have knocked off the #1 and a #5 seeded bands to advance to the Elite Eight. Now, they face their most formidable opponent yet in the Grateful Dead, who eliminated the favored Eagles to advance.
Indie/Grunge/New Wave Division:
R.E.M. is now the only #1 seed still remaining in the competition after a close-fought match against Pearl Jam. They now face the Talking Heads, who have recorded the most lopsided series of victories in the entire tournament.
Funk/R&B/Blues Division:
This division has featured one toss-up match after another, and the Sweet Sixteen Round was no exception. Prince and the Revolution edged past the favored Sly and the Family Stone to advance. Earth, Wind and Fire, meanwhile, posted a convincing victory against Parliament Funkadelic.
Punk/Hard Rock Division:
And now, the contest that we all knew was coming: #3 Aerosmith against #4 Van Halen. In the battle of punk against hard rock, it was no contest as Eddie and company easily dispatched the Ramones. Aerosmith, meanwhile, destroyed Metallica, proving the staying power of classic 70s hard rock against 80s speed metal.
Will the Dead square off against R.E.M in the Final Four? Will Van Halen continue their dominance against Prince? Vote in the Elite Eight Round and find out!
